Key Responsibilities
- Assess patients presenting with fractures, dislocations, sprains, and other musculoskeletal injuries before initiating appropriate orthopedic interventions.
- Manipulate and reduce fractures and joint dislocations under approved clinical protocols and professional supervision where applicable.
- Apply, adjust, reinforce, and safely remove plaster casts, fiberglass casts, splints, braces, and supportive orthopedic appliances.
- Prepare patients for orthopedic procedures while ensuring comfort, safety, and proper positioning.
- Apply and manage different forms of orthopedic traction according to established treatment plans.
- Monitor patients receiving casts or traction and identify early signs of complications requiring urgent medical review.
- Correct Congenital Talipes Equino-Varus (CTEV) using approved orthopedic treatment techniques and scheduled follow-up procedures.
- Perform routine assessment of musculoskeletal conditions and determine appropriate referral pathways for specialized care.
- Clean, dress, and manage uncomplicated wounds associated with orthopedic injuries while maintaining infection prevention standards.
- Educate patients and caregivers on cast care, mobility precautions, rehabilitation exercises, and injury prevention measures.
- Provide counseling that supports patient recovery, treatment adherence, and long-term musculoskeletal health.
- Document patient assessments, procedures performed, treatment outcomes, and follow-up recommendations accurately.
- Maintain confidential patient records in accordance with healthcare regulations and professional standards.
- Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons, clinicians, physiotherapists, nurses, and rehabilitation teams to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
- Participate in emergency trauma response services within healthcare facilities whenever required.
- Inspect orthopedic equipment regularly and report defects requiring repair or replacement.
- Ensure treatment rooms remain clean, organized, and adequately supplied with orthopedic materials and equipment.
- Observe occupational health and safety regulations while performing all clinical procedures.
- Promote infection prevention and control measures during patient care activities.
- Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical governance activities.
- Assist in health education programs that promote injury prevention and musculoskeletal wellness within the community.
- Support mentorship and knowledge sharing among junior healthcare staff where appropriate.
- Attend continuous professional development activities to maintain clinical competence.
- Comply with Ministry of Health regulations, county healthcare policies, and institutional procedures.
- Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, accountability, and respect in all interactions with patients and colleagues.
- Perform additional orthopedic trauma-related responsibilities assigned by authorized supervisors within the County Department of Health Services.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma in Orthopaedic Plaster Technology from a recognized institution.
- Certificate in Computer Applications from a recognized institution.
- Valid Practicing License where applicable.
- Registration with the relevant professional regulatory body where required.
- Ability to meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical healthcare practice.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
