Key Responsibilities
- Deliver specialized anesthesia nursing services for elective and emergency surgical procedures in accordance with established clinical protocols.
- Prepare patients thoroughly before anesthesia administration through comprehensive clinical assessments and pre-operative evaluation.
- Monitor patients continuously before, during, and after anesthesia to ensure maximum safety.
- Support anesthesiologists, surgeons, and theatre teams throughout operative procedures.
- Operate, inspect, and maintain anesthesia machines and associated monitoring equipment.
- Prepare operating theatres to ensure readiness for scheduled surgical procedures.
- Participate in intensive care management for critically ill patients requiring specialized nursing interventions.
- Monitor vital signs and identify early indicators of clinical deterioration.
- Initiate appropriate emergency responses during anesthesia-related complications.
- Administer prescribed medications accurately while maintaining complete medication safety standards.
- Maintain precise and confidential patient documentation throughout the perioperative process.
- Promote infection prevention and control measures within theatres, recovery units, and intensive care environments.
- Ensure compliance with national nursing standards, hospital guidelines, and professional ethics.
- Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and contribute to patient management decisions.
- Coordinate referrals for patients requiring advanced specialized healthcare services.
- Provide professional guidance and emotional support to patients and their families before and after surgical procedures.
- Educate patients regarding treatment plans, recovery expectations, and preventive health practices.
- Mentor nursing students, interns, and newly deployed healthcare personnel during clinical attachment.
- Support continuous professional development activities within the department.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and clinical performance reviews.
- Assist in developing and implementing patient safety strategies.
- Report equipment faults and coordinate timely maintenance activities.
- Monitor availability of anesthesia supplies and recommend replenishment where necessary.
- Participate in disaster preparedness and emergency response planning.
- Uphold confidentiality while handling patient records and sensitive medical information.
- Collaborate effectively with pharmacists, laboratory personnel, radiographers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to clinical audits and implementation of evidence-based nursing practices.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization within assigned work areas.
- Promote respectful, compassionate, and patient-centered healthcare delivery.
- Participate in health education initiatives targeting patients and the wider community.
- Demonstrate leadership during clinical emergencies requiring rapid coordination.
- Support implementation of digital health records and hospital information systems where applicable.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and workplace safety regulations.
- Participate in performance appraisal processes and departmental planning activities.
- Maintain current professional knowledge through approved continuing education programmes.
- Perform additional duties assigned by departmental management that align with the objectives of the Department of Health Services.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Higher National Diploma in Nursing (Anesthesia) from a recognized institution.
- Diploma in Community Health Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid Practicing License issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Registration Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications.
- Good professional standing with the relevant regulatory body.
