Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive orthopedic technical procedures in accordance with approved clinical standards and established healthcare protocols.
- Assess patients presenting with fractures, musculoskeletal injuries, trauma, and orthopedic conditions before initiating appropriate technical interventions.
- Manipulate and reduce selected fractures and dislocations under the guidance of authorized medical practitioners and within professional scope of practice.
- Apply, adjust, monitor, repair, replace, and safely remove plaster casts, synthetic casts, splints, braces, and other immobilization devices.
- Prepare patients for orthopedic procedures by explaining treatment processes and obtaining cooperation throughout care.
- Correct congenital orthopedic deformities such as Congenital Talipes Equino-Varus (CTEV) using approved clinical techniques.
- Assist orthopedic specialists during fracture management, reduction procedures, and other trauma-related interventions.
- Clean, dress, and manage uncomplicated orthopedic wounds while observing infection prevention and control measures.
- Monitor patients after cast application to identify circulation problems, pressure areas, swelling, discomfort, or complications requiring immediate attention.
- Provide guidance to patients regarding cast maintenance, mobility precautions, hygiene practices, nutrition, rehabilitation, and follow-up appointments.
- Educate family members and caregivers on supporting patients during recovery and safe home-based care practices.
- Identify orthopedic emergencies requiring urgent referral and coordinate prompt transfer to higher levels of specialized care whenever necessary.
- Maintain accurate patient records, treatment documentation, clinical reports, and service registers in accordance with healthcare regulations.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient information while complying with professional ethics and legal requirements.
- Participate in orthopedic outpatient clinics, trauma units, emergency departments, and inpatient services as assigned.
- Prepare orthopedic equipment, treatment materials, and clinical workstations before patient procedures.
- Inspect orthopedic instruments regularly and report maintenance needs or equipment faults promptly.
- Monitor stock levels of casting materials, bandages, splints, braces, consumables, and related clinical supplies.
- Support departmental quality improvement activities aimed at enhancing patient safety and service delivery.
- Collaborate effectively with orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physiotherapists, clinical officers, pharmacists, radiographers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in health education initiatives that promote injury prevention, bone health, workplace safety, and community awareness.
- Observe occupational safety procedures while minimizing risks to patients, colleagues, and visitors.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe orthopedic treatment environment throughout each working day.
- Participate in departmental meetings, professional training sessions, audits, mentorship activities, and continuing professional development programs.
- Respond professionally to patient concerns while delivering compassionate, respectful, and culturally sensitive healthcare services.
- Support implementation of county health policies, operational guidelines, and institutional performance objectives.
- Demonstrate accountability, punctuality, integrity, teamwork, and professionalism in all assigned responsibilities.
- Perform additional lawful duties assigned by supervisors within the Department of Health Services that align with the objectives of the Orthopedic Technologist III position.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma in Orthopaedic Technology from a recognized institution.
- Certificate in Computer Applications from a recognized institution.
- Valid Practising License where applicable.
- Registration with the relevant professional regulatory body where required.
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical healthcare practice.
- Eligibility to work within the Kenyan public service.
