Job Description

The Kwale County Public Service Board is inviting applications from dedicated, skilled, and service-oriented professionals to join the Department of Health Services as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) on permanent and pensionable terms. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about emergency healthcare and committed to providing timely medical assistance that protects lives and improves patient outcomes within communities across Kwale County. The successful candidates will become part of frontline emergency response teams responsible for delivering immediate pre-hospital medical care to individuals experiencing illness, injury, trauma, or other urgent health conditions. Working in collaboration with healthcare professionals, ambulance personnel, referral facilities, and emergency response agencies, EMTs play an essential role in ensuring patients receive safe, effective, and compassionate care before reaching medical institutions. This position requires professionals who can remain calm under pressure, make sound clinical decisions in rapidly changing situations, and communicate effectively with patients, families, colleagues, and healthcare providers. Key Responsibilities

  • Respond rapidly to emergency calls and provide immediate pre-hospital medical assistance.
  • Assess patients using recognized emergency medical assessment procedures.
  • Determine the urgency of medical conditions and prioritize treatment accordingly.
  • Deliver safe and effective emergency interventions within the approved scope of EMT practice.
  • Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) procedures whenever clinically required.
  • Assist with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) interventions where appropriately authorized.
  • Stabilize trauma, medical, pediatric, and obstetric patients before transportation.
  • Administer emergency first aid using approved clinical guidelines.
  • Monitor patient vital signs continuously during emergency response and transportation.
  • Maintain clear communication with receiving healthcare facilities regarding patient status.
  • Safely transport patients while ensuring comfort and continuous monitoring.
  • Prepare ambulances before every deployment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Inspect emergency medical equipment and report defects promptly.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of emergency medicines, consumables, and medical supplies.
  • Ensure ambulance interiors remain clean, disinfected, and compliant with infection prevention standards.
  • Complete accurate patient care records and emergency response documentation.
  • Observe confidentiality and protect sensitive patient information at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters, and other emergency responders.
  • Participate in disaster preparedness and mass casualty response activities.
  • Follow established occupational safety and infection control procedures.
  • Provide reassurance and emotional support to patients and accompanying relatives.
  • Assist in patient transfers between healthcare facilities where necessary.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, clinical updates, and continuous professional training.
  • Uphold professional ethics and public service values during every assignment.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by authorized supervisors in support of emergency healthcare delivery.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its recognized equivalent.
  • Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Paramedicine, or another relevant qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by a recognized training institution.
  • Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from a recognized institution.
  • Demonstrated professional competence through previous training, practical experience, or performance.
  • Ability to work responsibly under emergency conditions.
  • Strong commitment to ethical healthcare practice and patient safety.
