Responsibilities for Ophthalmologist in Kenya

• Perform advanced diagnostic procedures such as gonioscopy, pachymetry, fluorescein angiography, and ultrasound B-scan where indicated.
• Screen, diagnose, and manage chronic eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

• Perform minor ophthalmic procedures such as foreign body removal, eyelid surgeries, and laser treatments within scope.
• Ensure accurate documentation of surgical procedures, outcomes, and complications for audit and quality improvement purposes.
• Participate in the planning and implementation of blindness prevention programs at institutional and community levels.
• Coordinate referral systems for specialized care and ensure continuity of care for patients requiring advanced interventions.
• Provide counselling and informed consent discussions for patients undergoing surgical or complex medical treatments.
• Support emergency department services by providing on-call ophthalmology coverage as required.
• Assist in procurement planning and evaluation of ophthalmic drugs, consumables, and equipment.
• Implement patient safety protocols and contribute to risk management strategies within the department.
• Participate in multidisciplinary tumour boards for management of ocular and orbital malignancies.
• Develop patient education materials and participate in health promotion campaigns focused on eye health.
• Monitor and evaluate service delivery using key performance indicators and clinical benchmarks.
• Engage in telemedicine and digital health initiatives for remote ophthalmic consultations where applicable.
• Ensure compliance with national health regulations, ethical standards, and institutional policies.
• Participate in accreditation processes and external quality assessments for ophthalmology services.
• Facilitate training workshops, seminars, and continuous medical education sessions for healthcare staff.
• Contribute to innovation and adoption of new surgical techniques and emerging ophthalmic technologies.
• Identify and report adverse drug reactions and surgical complications in accordance with reporting guidelines.
• Promote patient-centered care by incorporating patient preferences and expectations into treatment planning.
