Job Description

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) invites applications from accomplished geothermal professionals for the position of Manager – Geothermal Resource Management. This leadership opportunity is suited to an experienced technical manager who is passionate about advancing sustainable energy development through responsible geothermal resource planning, reservoir stewardship, and multidisciplinary project leadership. Reporting to the General Manager – Geothermal Resource Development, the successful candidate will provide strategic direction for geothermal resource management initiatives while supporting the organization's long-term vision of expanding reliable renewable energy production in Kenya. The position carries responsibility for guiding reservoir management strategies that maximize geothermal field productivity while safeguarding long-term resource sustainability. The successful candidate will oversee technical teams responsible for geothermal reservoir evaluation, steam field performance analysis, exploration planning, heat flow investigations, well targeting, drilling support, and scientific resource assessment. The role also provides leadership in preparing departmental operational plans, budget implementation, performance monitoring, policy development, and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with corporate strategic objectives. Working closely with geoscientists, reservoir engineers, drilling specialists, environmental experts, project managers, and external stakeholders, the Manager will ensure that geothermal development activities are executed using internationally recognized technical standards, modern scientific methodologies, and sound environmental practices. The successful candidate will also coordinate reservoir monitoring programs, evaluate field performance data, recommend production optimization measures, and support decision-making through advanced technical analysis. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership in the planning, coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of geothermal resource management programs across assigned geothermal development areas.
  • Develop departmental operational strategies, annual work plans, performance targets, and budget proposals aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Lead reservoir management activities aimed at maximizing sustainable steam production while protecting long-term geothermal resource integrity.
  • Formulate, review, and implement policies, technical procedures, and operational guidelines supporting geothermal reservoir development and management.
  • Supervise multidisciplinary technical teams involved in reservoir engineering, geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geothermal exploration, and production monitoring.
  • Coordinate geothermal surface exploration programs, heat flow surveys, geological investigations, and scientific field assessments.
  • Guide the identification, technical evaluation, ranking, and prioritization of prospective geothermal development areas.
  • Direct reservoir modeling activities to improve understanding of subsurface conditions and production performance.
  • Coordinate well siting, drilling target selection, and scientific support throughout drilling operations.
  • Monitor drilling progress and provide technical recommendations that improve operational effectiveness and reservoir productivity.
  • Oversee reservoir surveillance programs through pressure monitoring, temperature analysis, production testing, and field performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate steam field management activities to ensure efficient steam production and sustainable reservoir utilization.
  • Manage steam gathering systems and oversee implementation of steam supply arrangements supporting electricity generation.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to improve geothermal production infrastructure and operational efficiency.
  • Provide technical guidance during feasibility studies, resource assessments, development planning, and investment evaluations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, environmental standards, occupational safety practices, and company policies.
  • Strengthen collaboration with internal departments, government agencies, development partners, consultants, research institutions, and industry stakeholders.
  • Mentor technical staff through coaching, performance management, succession planning, and professional development initiatives.
  • Promote innovation by encouraging adoption of modern geothermal technologies, scientific research, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Prepare technical reports, management presentations, performance reviews, and strategic recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Monitor departmental performance indicators and implement corrective actions where necessary.
  • Support organizational risk management by identifying technical, operational, environmental, and resource-related risks.
  • Manage departmental resources responsibly while ensuring efficient utilization of financial, technical, and human resources.
  • Represent the department during professional engagements, technical forums, industry conferences, and stakeholder consultations.
  • Perform any other relevant responsibilities assigned by senior management in support of organizational objectives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Earth Science, Geological Science, Geology, Geochemistry, Geothermal Technology, or another relevant discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Earth Science, Geological Science, Geology, Chemistry, Geochemistry, Physics, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Management course with a cumulative duration of at least four weeks from a recognized institution.
  • Membership in the Geothermal Association of Kenya (GAK) or another relevant professional body.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications relevant to technical and managerial functions.
  • Fulfillment of the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
