Job Description

The Kenya Trade Network Agency (KENTRADE) is seeking to recruit a highly capable Infrastructure Engineer to strengthen its Information and Communication Technology team based in Nairobi. This position offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced ICT professional who is passionate about designing, maintaining, and improving enterprise technology environments that support critical national trade systems. The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring that the organization's infrastructure remains secure, reliable, scalable, and capable of supporting current and future digital transformation initiatives. Working closely with the Assistant Manager, Infrastructure and Service Management, the Infrastructure Engineer will participate in the planning, implementation, optimization, and continuous improvement of ICT infrastructure across the organization. The role involves managing enterprise networks, server environments, cloud-based platforms, data centre technologies, virtualization infrastructure, storage solutions, power systems, backup environments, and security technologies. The position also supports business continuity by maintaining high system availability and ensuring rapid response to infrastructure incidents. The successful candidate will contribute to the deployment of modern networking technologies while supporting secure connectivity for employees, partners, and stakeholders. The role requires proactive monitoring of infrastructure performance, identification of potential risks, implementation of preventive maintenance activities, and execution of system upgrades with minimal disruption to business operations. The engineer will also assist in evaluating emerging technologies and recommending practical improvements that enhance efficiency, resilience, and operational excellence. This position requires strong technical expertise combined with analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and excellent collaboration skills. The Infrastructure Engineer will regularly work with internal departments, external technology vendors, consultants, and implementation partners to ensure infrastructure projects are completed according to organizational standards, security requirements, and best industry practices. Maintaining accurate technical documentation, asset inventories, disaster recovery procedures, and infrastructure configuration records will form an important part of daily responsibilities. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure that supports secure, reliable, and high-performance business operations.
  • Install, configure, and administer managed switches, routers, wireless controllers, access points, firewalls, VPN gateways, and other network security devices.
  • Maintain secure local area networks, wide area networks, wireless infrastructure, structured cabling systems, and associated power equipment.
  • Monitor network performance using appropriate management tools and implement improvements that enhance speed, stability, and availability.
  • Configure IP addressing schemes, DNS services, VLANs, routing protocols, EtherChannel, and other enterprise networking technologies.
  • Support server infrastructure including Windows Server, virtualization platforms, storage systems, cloud resources, and backup environments.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities to ensure infrastructure components operate efficiently and remain highly available.
  • Investigate infrastructure faults, diagnose root causes, and implement timely corrective actions to minimize operational downtime.
  • Participate in planning, testing, and implementing infrastructure upgrades while ensuring uninterrupted delivery of ICT services.
  • Strengthen cybersecurity by maintaining firewall policies, VPN configurations, access controls, endpoint protection, and security monitoring solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational ICT standards, security frameworks, operational procedures, and infrastructure governance requirements.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation covering network diagrams, infrastructure configurations, system inventories, maintenance schedules, and recovery procedures.
  • Monitor infrastructure capacity and recommend upgrades to support future business growth and technology requirements.
  • Coordinate with technology vendors, contractors, and service providers during infrastructure implementation, maintenance, and support activities.
  • Support disaster recovery planning, business continuity initiatives, and infrastructure resilience programmes.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of ICT hardware, networking equipment, software licenses, and infrastructure assets.
  • Conduct routine health assessments of servers, storage devices, network appliances, cloud services, and power systems.
  • Participate in infrastructure security audits, vulnerability assessments, and implementation of recommended improvements.
  • Assist internal users by providing advanced technical support for infrastructure-related issues and escalated incidents.
  • Evaluate emerging infrastructure technologies and recommend practical solutions that improve operational efficiency and system reliability.
  • Implement system monitoring tools and generate regular reports on infrastructure performance, utilization, availability, and security.
  • Collaborate with ICT colleagues in implementing enterprise technology projects and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Ensure all infrastructure modifications follow approved change management procedures and minimize service interruptions.
  • Support the implementation of cloud-based services and hybrid infrastructure environments where applicable.
  • Participate in regular infrastructure reviews to identify optimization opportunities and recommend continuous improvements.
  • Protect organizational information assets through effective infrastructure security controls and operational best practices.
  • Maintain professional knowledge by keeping up to date with current networking technologies, cybersecurity trends, and enterprise infrastructure innovations.
  • Provide technical guidance during procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of new ICT infrastructure.
  • Prepare technical reports, implementation documentation, maintenance records, and infrastructure status updates for management.
  • Perform any other infrastructure engineering responsibilities assigned in support of organizational ICT objectives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information and communication technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or another closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Professional CCNA certification is mandatory.
  • Additional certifications such as CCNP, Microsoft Certified, VMware, Fortinet, Azure, AWS, Linux, or cybersecurity certifications will provide an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise network architecture, switching, routing, wireless technologies, and network security.
  • Practical understanding of firewalls, VPN technologies, intrusion prevention, access control, and infrastructure protection.
  • Experience supporting Windows Server environments, virtualization platforms, storage technologies, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP networking, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing protocols, and enterprise connectivity solutions.
  • Ability to diagnose complex infrastructure faults and implement effective technical solutions.
