Job Description

Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital is seeking a skilled and dedicated Medical Specialist I (Neurosurgeon) to strengthen its growing neurosurgical services and support the delivery of advanced neurological care across the region. This position offers an opportunity to work within a busy referral hospital where complex cases, specialist collaboration, and high standards of patient care are part of everyday practice. The successful appointee will evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and related neurological structures. Responsibilities will include performing neurosurgical procedures, overseeing pre-operative and post-operative care, and providing timely intervention for both scheduled and emergency cases. The role requires strong clinical judgment, technical precision, and the ability to make effective decisions in demanding situations. The neurosurgeon will work closely with professionals from emergency medicine, anesthesia, radiology, intensive care, rehabilitation, nursing, pharmacy, pathology, and other clinical departments to ensure coordinated treatment and smooth patient transitions. Through active participation in case discussions and treatment planning, the specialist will help improve patient outcomes and strengthen the quality of neurological services offered by the hospital. In addition to clinical duties, the position includes contributing to service improvement efforts, surgical outcome reviews, departmental planning, and the development of practical treatment guidelines that support safe and efficient care. The successful candidate will also provide guidance to junior doctors, interns, residents, and other healthcare professionals through mentorship, bedside teaching, and theatre-based learning. Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patient referrals to determine the urgency and suitability of neurosurgical intervention.
  • Perform cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve operations in accordance with established surgical practices.
  • Interpret neurological imaging, laboratory findings, and diagnostic investigations to guide treatment decisions.
  • Lead operating theatre teams during neurosurgical procedures, ensuring effective coordination throughout each stage of care.
  • Prepare individualized discharge plans and oversee follow-up care to support recovery and long-term neurological health.
  • Provide specialist advice to referring clinicians on the management of complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions.
  • Contribute to the assessment, selection, and appropriate use of equipment required for neurosurgical services.
  • Support departmental planning by identifying practical opportunities to strengthen specialist surgical services.
  • Provide expert clinical input during emergency trauma cases involving suspected neurological injury.
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and legally compliant surgical records, operative reports, and patient documentation.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Neurosurgery or an equivalent specialist qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Valid practicing license issued by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • Recognition as a licensed specialist in Neurosurgery.
  • Successful completion of a one
  • year medical internship where applicable.
  • Valid certificates in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical medical practice and patient

  • Competence in operative planning for complex neurological conditions.
  • Ability to interpret advanced neuroimaging and diagnostic findings.
  • Proficiency in perioperative neurosurgical decision

  • Confidence in managing high

  • Ability to coordinate specialist care across multiple clinical disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of neurosurgical theatre workflows.
  • Knowledge of contemporary neurosurgical techniques and clinical protocols.
