Job Description

A progressive healthcare organization is seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Technologist to strengthen its diagnostic services team in Nairobi. The Laboratory Technologist will independently perform a broad range of diagnostic procedures involving biological specimens using established laboratory methodologies, automated analyzers, and modern diagnostic equipment. The role requires strict adherence to laboratory protocols, biosafety regulations, infection prevention measures, and internationally accepted quality management practices. The successful applicant will verify specimen integrity, conduct laboratory analyses, validate test results, identify abnormalities, maintain accurate documentation, and communicate critical findings according to approved procedures. Working collaboratively with pathologists, clinicians, nurses, and fellow laboratory professionals, the successful candidate will help ensure efficient laboratory operations while supporting continuous quality improvement initiatives. The position also involves participating in internal and external quality assurance programs, equipment calibration, inventory monitoring, reagent management, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards governing medical laboratories in Kenya. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and specialized laboratory examinations on clinical specimens while following approved diagnostic procedures and established professional standards.
  • Receive, verify, label, prepare, and process patient samples with exceptional attention to specimen identification and integrity.
  • Operate automated laboratory analyzers, microscopes, and diagnostic instruments safely and efficiently according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Perform analytical testing across various laboratory disciplines, including hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, parasitology, and serology where applicable.
  • Validate laboratory findings before releasing results to ensure reliability, consistency, and diagnostic accuracy.
  • Promptly communicate urgent or critical laboratory findings through approved reporting channels while maintaining complete confidentiality.
  • Maintain comprehensive laboratory records, registers, electronic data, and documentation in accordance with organizational requirements.
  • Participate actively in laboratory quality management systems by supporting quality control procedures, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct routine equipment maintenance, calibration verification, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring to minimize operational interruptions.
  • Monitor laboratory reagent inventory, consumables, and supplies while reporting replenishment needs before stock shortages occur.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of biological specimens, chemicals, and laboratory waste in compliance with biosafety regulations.
  • Observe infection prevention, occupational safety, and environmental health practices throughout all laboratory activities.
  • Support implementation of laboratory accreditation standards and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate professionally with clinicians and other healthcare personnel to facilitate efficient diagnostic services and patient care.
  • Participate in staff meetings, technical discussions, competency assessments, and departmental improvement programs.
  • Assist with orientation and mentorship of interns, students, and newly recruited laboratory personnel whenever assigned.
  • Safeguard sensitive patient information by observing confidentiality and ethical laboratory practices at all times.
  • Report equipment faults, quality concerns, safety incidents, and operational risks promptly to laboratory management.
  • Contribute to departmental performance targets by maintaining efficiency, productivity, and exceptional service delivery standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional education to remain updated on emerging laboratory technologies, diagnostic methodologies, and professional best practices.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in laboratory sciences or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
  • Valid practicing license issued by the relevant regulatory authority.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety standards and diagnostic procedures.
