Job Description

Equity Afya is seeking an experienced, compassionate, and highly motivated **Medical Officer** to join our multidisciplinary healthcare team in Nairobi, Kenya. The Medical Officer will evaluate patients presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions, establish accurate diagnoses through thorough clinical assessments, and formulate individualized treatment plans that reflect current medical standards and organizational protocols. The role requires close collaboration with nurses, specialists, laboratory professionals, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers to ensure seamless delivery of quality medical care. The successful applicant will actively participate in the management of internal medicine cases while supporting emergency response services whenever required. Responsibilities also include interpreting laboratory and diagnostic findings, prescribing appropriate medications, monitoring treatment progress, and ensuring timely follow-up for patients with ongoing healthcare needs. The Medical Officer will educate patients and families on disease prevention, treatment options, medication adherence, healthy lifestyles, and long-term wellness strategies. In addition to direct patient care, the position demands accurate clinical documentation, proper utilization of Health Management Information Systems (HMIS), compliance with regulatory standards, and adherence to infection prevention and quality assurance guidelines. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient consultations, including detailed medical history reviews, physical examinations, diagnostic assessments, and formulation of individualized treatment plans.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage acute illnesses, chronic diseases, and complex internal medicine conditions using evidence-based clinical guidelines.
  • Provide timely emergency medical care while ensuring stabilization of critically ill patients before referral whenever necessary.
  • Prescribe medications responsibly while monitoring effectiveness, potential adverse reactions, and patient adherence to treatment plans.
  • Interpret laboratory investigations, imaging reports, electrocardiograms, and other diagnostic findings to support accurate clinical decisions.
  • Collaborate with consultants, nursing teams, pharmacists, laboratory professionals, radiographers, and allied healthcare personnel to deliver coordinated patient care.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential patient records using approved Health Management Information Systems and organizational documentation standards.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on disease prevention, medication compliance, nutrition, healthy lifestyle practices, and long-term disease management.
  • Participate actively in ward rounds, multidisciplinary clinical meetings, morbidity reviews, and patient case conferences.
  • Monitor patient progress, evaluate treatment outcomes, and modify management plans whenever clinically appropriate.
  • Ensure strict compliance with infection prevention protocols, patient safety standards, clinical governance policies, and ethical medical practice.
  • Support preventive healthcare initiatives including screening programs, vaccination campaigns, health education sessions, and wellness promotion activities.
  • Participate in continuous professional development, medical training programs, and evidence-based clinical updates.
  • Supervise and mentor junior healthcare staff, interns, and clinical support personnel whenever assigned.
  • Respond effectively to medical emergencies while applying current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support principles.
  • Ensure compliance with Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council regulations and other applicable healthcare requirements.
  • Contribute to clinical audits, quality improvement projects, policy implementation, and organizational performance initiatives.
  • Maintain professional relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and external healthcare stakeholders while promoting excellent patient experiences.
  • Support efficient utilization of hospital resources while maintaining high standards of clinical care.
  • Perform additional clinical and administrative responsibilities assigned by management in support of organizational healthcare objectives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from a recognized university.
  • Valid registration and current practicing license issued by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Certificate in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Demonstrated experience in Internal Medicine or a strong professional interest in Internal Medicine practice.
  • Sound knowledge of healthcare legislation, clinical governance, and patient safety standards.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records and Health Management Information Systems.
