Job Description

The Kenya School of Government is seeking to recruit two experienced and highly motivated professionals to fill the position of Swimming Pool Attendant III on a contract basis. The successful candidates will support the effective management, safety, cleanliness, and day-to-day operations of the institution's swimming pool facilities located in Mombasa, Tsavo East. The Swimming Pool Attendant III will play an important role in ensuring that all swimming activities are conducted in a safe, organized, and professionally managed environment. The role also requires regular inspection of swimming pool equipment, treatment systems, filtration units, rescue equipment, and surrounding facilities to ensure they remain in excellent working condition. The officer will monitor chemical levels, maintain accurate operational records, report maintenance requirements, and support routine preventive maintenance activities. Working closely with supervisors and other facility personnel, the Swimming Pool Attendant III will help ensure uninterrupted operation of the swimming pool while maintaining exceptional standards of hygiene and safety. Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise swimming pool activities continuously to maintain a safe environment for all authorized users.
  • Observe swimmers carefully and identify potentially hazardous situations before they escalate.
  • Respond immediately to emergencies using approved lifesaving techniques and rescue procedures.
  • Administer CPR and First Aid whenever necessary until medical personnel assume responsibility.
  • Enforce all swimming pool regulations fairly and consistently without discrimination.
  • Guide swimmers on proper pool etiquette and safe swimming practices.
  • Conduct routine inspections of rescue equipment before each operating session.
  • Ensure lifebuoys, rescue poles, first aid kits, and emergency equipment remain fully operational.
  • Monitor pool water quality by checking chemical levels according to established standards.
  • Assist in swimming pool treatment activities using approved chemicals and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of water testing, chemical usage, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Report equipment defects, safety concerns, and operational risks promptly to supervisors.
  • Support preventive maintenance schedules for pumps, filters, and water circulation systems.
  • Keep pool decks, changing rooms, showers, and surrounding recreational areas clean and orderly.
  • Remove potential hazards that may increase the risk of slips, falls, or injuries.
  • Control access to the swimming facility in accordance with institutional guidelines.
  • Provide courteous assistance and accurate information to swimmers and authorized visitors.
  • Encourage responsible use of swimming facilities while promoting safety awareness.
  • Assist in organizing swimming lessons or aquatic activities when assigned.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and institutional safety exercises.
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health, environmental, and public safety regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while performing assigned duties.
  • Work collaboratively with maintenance personnel and administrative staff to resolve operational issues.
  • Participate in continuous professional development activities related to aquatic safety.
  • Demonstrate integrity, accountability, punctuality, and excellent work ethics.
  • Prepare routine operational reports and submit them within established timelines.
  • Maintain inventory records for pool chemicals, cleaning materials, and safety equipment.
  • Support implementation of institutional quality standards for recreational facilities.
  • Observe weather conditions and suspend activities whenever safety is compromised.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures for the swimming pool facility.
  • Maintain a welcoming atmosphere that promotes positive user experiences.
  • Follow instructions issued by supervisors and perform additional lawful duties related to the position.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certificate in Lifeguarding and Swimming Instruction, Swimming Pool Treatment, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid Certificate from a recognized institution with a course lasting at least one week.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience as a Swimming Pool Attendant III or in a comparable position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of swimming pool operations and water treatment procedures.
  • Strong lifesaving and emergency response skills.
  • Excellent swimmer with sound physical fitness.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to identify hazards and respond promptly.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices.
  • High level of integrity, discipline, and professionalism.
