Responsibilities for Medical Officer-Grade 12 (Ref: UoEm/MO/02/2026) in Kenya

• The Medical Officer will be responsible for diagnosing, managing, and treating patients presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. This includes performing thorough medical assessments, interpreting laboratory and diagnostic results, and developing individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs. The officer will ensure that all prescribed medications, therapies, and interventions are evidence-based, follow national clinical guidelines, and are appropriate for each patient’s condition.
• Conducting patient consultations is a key aspect of the role. The officer will actively listen to patients, gather comprehensive medical histories, and perform physical examinations while maintaining accurate and up-to-date medical records. All patient interactions and records must uphold strict confidentiality and comply with professional ethics and legal standards.
• The Medical Officer will participate in hospital management activities, contributing to departmental planning, policy formulation, and continuous improvement initiatives. They will lead and facilitate staff training programs, ensuring that junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver high-quality care.
• Treatment plans will be monitored closely, with coordination among specialists, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive patient care. The officer will provide emergency medical services, managing critical cases with prompt assessment and intervention to stabilize patients.
• Engagement in preventive healthcare programs is expected, including health education for patients, community outreach, and public health initiatives aimed at disease prevention and health promotion. The officer will participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and continuing professional development to maintain high standards of clinical practice.
• Mentorship is a vital responsibility, including supervising medical students, interns, and junior staff, providing guidance, feedback, and performance evaluations to build capacity within the hospital. The officer will use computerized health management systems to track patient care, generate reports, and analyze clinical data to inform decision-making.
• Finally, the Medical Officer will promote a culture of safety, ethical practice, and patient-centered care within the hospital, ensuring that all activities align with national medical regulations, hospital policies, and best practices in healthcare delivery.
