Responsibilities for Laboratory Technologist in Kenya

• Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests in hematology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, serology, parasitology, and related disciplines in accordance with approved standard operating procedures. Ensure all analyses are conducted with precision and within established turnaround times to support timely diagnosis and treatment.
• Collect, receive, label, verify, and process clinical specimens properly, ensuring correct patient identification and sample integrity at all stages of handling. Reject and document unsuitable samples according to established protocols and communicate promptly with relevant departments where recollection is required.
• Analyze laboratory results accurately, interpret findings within established reference ranges, and promptly report validated results to clinicians to support informed clinical decision-making. Escalate critical values immediately following established critical result reporting procedures.
• Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments to ensure optimal functionality. Perform routine maintenance checks, document performance logs, and coordinate repairs when necessary to minimize downtime.
• Ensure full compliance with Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS) by participating in internal quality control procedures and external quality assessment schemes. Identify deviations, document non-conformities, and contribute to corrective and preventive action plans.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records, worksheets, equipment logs, reagent inventories, and patient data in both manual and electronic systems, including Health Management Information Systems (HMIS).
• Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols, biosafety standards, and biomedical waste management procedures to maintain a safe working environment for staff and patients.
• Monitor inventory levels of reagents, consumables, and other laboratory supplies, ensuring proper storage conditions and timely replenishment to avoid service interruptions.
• Participate in proficiency testing, staff meetings, case discussions, and continuous professional development programs to enhance technical competence and remain updated with advancements in laboratory science.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with data protection policies, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements at all times.
• Support audits, inspections, and accreditation processes by preparing documentation and implementing recommended improvements.
• Collaborate closely with clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff to clarify test requests, discuss results, and contribute to optimal patient care.
• The Laboratory Technologist will also contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing laboratory efficiency, reducing errors, and strengthening service delivery standards. The role requires strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high professional and ethical standards while working independently or as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
