The Laboratory Technologist will also be responsible for operating, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment to ensure optimal functionality and minimal downtime. Proper documentation of test results, maintenance of laboratory logs, reagent records, equipment maintenance schedules, and the use of Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) will form an essential part of daily duties. Responsibilities for Laboratory Technologist in Kenya

  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments to ensure optimal functionality. Perform routine maintenance checks, document performance logs, and coordinate repairs when necessary to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure full compliance with Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS) by participating in internal quality control procedures and external quality assessment schemes. Identify deviations, document non-conformities, and contribute to corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, worksheets, equipment logs, reagent inventories, and patient data in both manual and electronic systems, including Health Management Information Systems (HMIS).
  • Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols, biosafety standards, and biomedical waste management procedures to maintain a safe working environment for staff and patients.
  • Monitor inventory levels of reagents, consumables, and other laboratory supplies, ensuring proper storage conditions and timely replenishment to avoid service interruptions.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, staff meetings, case discussions, and continuous professional development programs to enhance technical competence and remain updated with advancements in laboratory science.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with data protection policies, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements at all times.
  • Support audits, inspections, and accreditation processes by preparing documentation and implementing recommended improvements.
  • Collaborate closely with clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff to clarify test requests, discuss results, and contribute to optimal patient care.
