Responsibilities for Nursing Officer-Grade 7/8 in Kenya

• The Nursing Officer-Grade 7/8 at the University of Embu will be responsible for providing comprehensive, high-quality nursing care in accordance with established professional standards, clinical guidelines, and institutional policies. The officer will assess patients’ health conditions through thorough history taking, physical examination, and continuous monitoring of vital signs to ensure timely and appropriate interventions.
• Key responsibilities will include administering prescribed medications and treatments safely and accurately, observing patients for adverse reactions, and documenting all procedures appropriately. The Nursing Officer will assist medical officers during clinical examinations, minor procedures, and emergency situations, ensuring that all necessary equipment and supplies are prepared and available. In emergency cases, the officer will respond promptly by providing first aid, basic life support, and other life-saving interventions while coordinating referrals when necessary.
• The role also involves maintaining accurate, up-to-date, and confidential patient records in both manual and electronic systems. The Nursing Officer will prepare medical reports, compile health statistics, and ensure proper documentation in compliance with healthcare regulations. The officer will offer health education and counseling services to patients and clients on disease prevention, medication adherence, nutrition, reproductive health, mental health awareness, and the adoption of healthy lifestyles.
• Additionally, the Nursing Officer will actively participate in public health initiatives such as vaccination programs, routine medical screenings, wellness campaigns, and health awareness activities within the university community. Ensuring strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures, including sterilization procedures and proper waste disposal, will be a critical aspect of the role.
• The officer will also manage medical supplies by monitoring stock levels, ensuring proper storage of pharmaceuticals and equipment, and reporting shortages in a timely manner. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals to promote coordinated and holistic patient care is essential. Furthermore, the Nursing Officer will utilize relevant computer applications for patient data management, scheduling, and reporting, and will perform any other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
