The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is a State Corporation established vide an Act of Parliament - The Statistics Act No. 4 of 2006. The mandate of KNBS is anchored on the âConstitution of Kenya 2010â. The KNBS is the Principal Agency of the Government for collecting, analyzing and disseminating statistical data in Kenya and the custodian of official statistical information and is also responsible for the co-ordination of the National Statistical System (NSS).

The Assistant Information Communication Technology Officer at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is responsible for supporting the development, operation, maintenance, and security of ICT systems that facilitate the collection, processing, analysis, storage, and dissemination of official national statistics. The role contributes to ensuring that ICT infrastructure and services effectively support the Bureauâs mandate in delivering accurate, timely, and reliable statistical information for national planning and decision-making.
The officer will assist in providing day-to-day technical support to KNBS staff by troubleshooting hardware, software, and network-related issues to minimize system downtime and enhance productivity. This includes supporting end users through helpdesk services, installing and configuring computer hardware, operating systems, and application software, and ensuring that ICT equipment is properly maintained and functional.
The Assistant ICT Officer will support the administration and maintenance of ICT infrastructure, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), servers, and communication systems. The officer will also assist in monitoring system performance, identifying potential faults, and escalating complex technical issues to senior ICT officers when necessary. In addition, the role involves supporting system upgrades, deployment of new technologies, and implementation of ICT projects related to surveys, censuses, and data management systems.
The position requires assisting in the management of data systems and ensuring adherence to information security policies and data protection standards. The officer will support routine data backup procedures, assist in maintaining system security controls, and help safeguard statistical data against loss, unauthorized access, or cyber threats. Documentation of ICT processes, system configurations, and support activities is also a key responsibility.
Furthermore, the Assistant Information Communication Technology Officer will assist in maintaining ICT inventories, preparing technical reports, and supporting procurement and asset management processes. The officer will work collaboratively with other ICT staff and users across departments and perform any other ICT-related duties as lawfully assigned by supervisors. The role demands integrity, professionalism, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning in line with emerging ICT trends and public sector requirements.
The Assistant Information Communication Technology Officer at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shall be responsible for supporting the effective delivery of ICT services that enable the Bureau to achieve its mandate of collecting, processing, and disseminating official statistical data. The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Installing computers and computer accessories for users, including desktops, laptops, printers, scanners, and other peripheral devices, and ensuring that all equipment is correctly configured and operational in line with KNBS ICT standards and policies.
Diagnosing and resolving simple computer-related faults, such as hardware malfunctions, software errors, operating system issues, and connectivity problems, in order to minimize downtime and ensure continuity of operations.
Providing user support and escalating complex ICT issues to senior ICT officers or specialized technical teams, while maintaining proper records of incidents, actions taken, and resolutions through the service desk system.
Compiling, updating, and maintaining an accurate inventory of all ICT assets, including computers, telecommunication equipment, accessories, licensed software, and related infrastructure, to support accountability, audits, and asset management processes.
Writing, testing, and modifying simple computer programs or scripts according to instructions and specifications, to support automation, data processing tasks, and improvement of internal ICT operations.
Repairing and maintaining ICT equipment and associated accessories, including routine preventive maintenance, replacement of faulty components, and coordination with vendors or service providers for specialized repairs.
Preparing service desk and ICT support reports, including summaries of user requests, system faults, resolutions provided, and emerging ICT issues, for review by supervisors and management.
Assisting in the maintenance and monitoring of ICT networks and systems, including local area networks (LANs), basic server environments, and communication systems, to ensure reliable connectivity and system availability.
Supporting ICT deployments for surveys, censuses, and field operations, including configuration of data collection devices, basic user training, and on-site technical support when required.
Assisting in implementing ICT security measures, such as user account management, password controls, antivirus updates, and data backup procedures, in compliance with government ICT and data protection policies.
Maintaining ICT documentation, including system configurations, installation manuals, and user guides, to support continuity and knowledge sharing within the Bureau.
Undertaking any other duties lawfully assigned by the supervisor, in support of KNBS ICT operations and strategic objectives.
