The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is a State Corporation established vide an Act of Parliament - The Statistics Act No. 4 of 2006. The mandate of KNBS is anchored on the ‘Constitution of Kenya 2010’. The KNBS is the Principal Agency of the Government for collecting, analyzing and disseminating statistical data in Kenya and the custodian of official statistical information and is also responsible for the co-ordination of the National Statistical System (NSS).

Job Description

The core responsibility of a Statistician at KNBS is to design, implement, and manage statistical surveys, censuses, and administrative data systems. This includes developing survey methodologies, sampling designs, data collection instruments, and fieldwork protocols. Statisticians work closely with field officers to ensure accurate data collection, conduct data validation and cleaning, and apply appropriate statistical techniques to analyze quantitative and qualitative data.
Statisticians are responsible for producing analytical reports, statistical abstracts, indicators, and datasets covering key sectors such as population and housing, economic performance, labour, education, health, agriculture, trade, and social development. They ensure that data outputs meet quality standards related to accuracy, consistency, comparability, and confidentiality. The role also involves maintaining statistical databases, applying modern data management tools, and using statistical software for analysis and visualization.
In addition, Statisticians at KNBS collaborate with government ministries, county governments, development partners, researchers, and other stakeholders to support evidence-based decision making. They provide technical advice on statistical concepts, indicators, and data interpretation, and may support capacity building through training and technical assistance. Dissemination of statistics through publications, press releases, dashboards, and user engagement forums is an important part of the role.
The position requires adherence to professional ethics, data protection principles, and confidentiality obligations. Statisticians are also expected to keep up to date with emerging statistical methods, international standards such as SDGs indicators, and innovations in data science and official statistics. Overall, the Statistician role at KNBS is essential to strengthening Kenya’s national statistical system and ensuring the availability of credible data to support sustainable development, governance, and public accountability. These efforts enhance transparency, inform policy formulation, improve service delivery, promote accountability, support planning, guide investment, strengthen monitoring, evaluation, and reporting, and contribute to inclusive, data-driven decision making across national and county levels in Kenya, ensuring long-term socio-economic growth, resilience, equity, and sustainability.

Job Responsibilities

1. Carrying out pre-tests and piloting of data collection instruments to ensure that questionnaires and tools are clear, relevant, user-friendly, and effective in capturing accurate and reliable data from respondents.

2. Setting up and managing control measures for the dispatch, tracking, and receipt of questionnaires in order to support efficient field operations, proper supervision, accountability, and timely completion of data collection activities.

3. Updating and maintaining statistical registers, checklists, and databases to ensure that records of data sources, establishments, households, and reporting units are accurate, current, and well documented.

4. Identifying appropriate statistical units and target populations for data collection, ensuring proper coverage, representativeness, and alignment with approved sampling frames and methodologies.

5. Following up on non-response and incomplete submissions from data providers to improve response rates, enhance data quality, and ensure completeness and reliability of datasets.

6. Preparing tabulation, processing, and analysis plans to guide the systematic handling, processing, and interpretation of collected data in line with established standards.

7. Collecting, collating, editing, validating, and analyzing data using approved statistical methods, tools, and software to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability of outputs.

8. Computing statistical indices, indicators, and measures that support monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of socio-economic trends at county and national levels.

9. Compiling, collating, and updating data for County Statistical Abstracts to ensure the availability of comprehensive, comparable, and reliable county-level statistics.

10. Disseminating county-level statistics through reports, publications, data releases, briefs, and other communication platforms to support evidence-based decision making.

11. Updating county-specific sampling units and frames to reflect changes in population, establishments, infrastructure, and administrative structures.

xii. Providing guidance and technical support to county-level stakeholders on statistical standards, concepts, methodologies, and data interpretation.

xiii. Undertaking any other duties lawfully assigned by the supervisor in support of institutional objectives and the strengthening of the national statistical system.
