Job Description

Kenya Pipeline Company PLC (KPC) invites applications from qualified, analytical, and highly motivated professionals for the position of Assistant Internal Auditor (Technical) – Grade KPC 7. This opportunity is designed for engineering graduates who possess a strong understanding of technical auditing principles and wish to contribute to the continuous improvement of one of Kenya's most critical energy infrastructure organizations. The successful candidate will become part of a professional Internal Audit team responsible for providing independent assurance over engineering operations, maintenance activities, capital projects, safety systems, environmental compliance, and operational controls across the organization. The role requires an individual capable of evaluating technical processes, identifying operational risks, and recommending practical improvements that strengthen governance, enhance operational efficiency, and safeguard company assets. Working closely with senior auditors and technical departments, the successful candidate will participate in risk-based audit assignments covering engineering projects, pipeline operations, maintenance programs, health and safety practices, procurement of technical equipment, environmental compliance, and infrastructure management. The position offers excellent exposure to modern audit methodologies, enterprise risk management practices, engineering standards, and corporate governance frameworks applicable within the petroleum transportation industry. The Assistant Internal Auditor (Technical) will support the preparation of annual audit plans through comprehensive risk assessments, ensuring audit priorities align with emerging organizational risks. The role involves collecting, examining, and interpreting engineering documentation, maintenance records, project reports, operational data, inspection findings, technical procedures, and regulatory requirements to determine compliance with internal policies and recognized industry standards. The successful candidate will prepare clear audit working papers, develop evidence-based observations, draft professional audit reports, and participate in monitoring the implementation of agreed corrective actions. This position also contributes to special investigations, advisory assignments, and management requests relating to technical operations whenever required. Key Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation and implementation of the annual risk-based internal audit plan covering engineering and technical operations.
  • Conduct continuous risk assessments across pipeline operations, engineering maintenance, projects, safety, environmental management, and related technical functions.
  • Participate in planning audit assignments by defining objectives, audit scope, methodology, timelines, and resource requirements.
  • Review engineering procedures, maintenance schedules, inspection reports, operational records, and technical documentation to evaluate compliance.
  • Examine engineering controls to determine whether operational risks are effectively identified and managed.
  • Verify compliance with company policies, statutory regulations, engineering standards, and industry best practices.
  • Evaluate project management processes to determine whether project objectives, budgets, schedules, and quality requirements are being achieved.
  • Assess maintenance programs for effectiveness, reliability, and adherence to preventive maintenance standards.
  • Perform audit fieldwork by gathering, validating, and documenting sufficient audit evidence.
  • Analyze operational information and engineering data to identify weaknesses, trends, inefficiencies, and potential risks.
  • Prepare accurate audit working papers supporting audit findings and recommendations.
  • Develop practical recommendations that strengthen operational efficiency and internal control systems.
  • Draft comprehensive audit reports presenting objective observations supported by factual evidence.
  • Participate in audit exit meetings with departmental management to discuss audit findings.
  • Monitor implementation of agreed corrective actions and verify closure of audit recommendations.
  • Participate in follow-up audits to evaluate effectiveness of implemented improvements.
  • Support special investigations, management reviews, and advisory assignments when required.
  • Evaluate technical risks associated with engineering operations and provide appropriate recommendations.
  • Review compliance with occupational health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive technical, operational, and financial information.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, operations, maintenance, procurement, finance, and compliance teams.
  • Identify opportunities for process automation and continuous improvement within audited functions.
  • Keep current with emerging engineering technologies, audit methodologies, and regulatory developments.
  • Assist in strengthening enterprise risk management through timely reporting of emerging operational risks.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports on assigned audit engagements.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, objectivity, integrity, and independence throughout every audit assignment.
  • Ensure audit activities comply with Internal Audit Standards and organizational policies.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives within the Internal Audit Department.
  • Represent the department professionally during cross-functional engagements.
  • Perform any additional technical audit responsibilities assigned by management in support of organizational objectives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Applicants should possess a bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized university. Candidates with academic backgrounds in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or closely related engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in common computer applications, including spreadsheet software, word processing, presentation tools, and digital reporting systems. A solid understanding of engineering principles applicable to pipeline operations, oil and gas infrastructure, maintenance management, asset integrity, technical compliance, and operational risk management will be highly desirable.
