Job Description

The County Government of Kericho is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and professionally qualified Disaster Management and Fire Safety Officer to strengthen county-wide emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction, and fire prevention initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate county disaster preparedness initiatives to strengthen emergency readiness across government institutions and public facilities.
  • Develop, review, and implement emergency response plans for various disaster scenarios including fire outbreaks, floods, structural incidents, and other emergencies.
  • Participate in strategic emergency planning meetings aimed at improving disaster response capacity within the county.
  • Organize regular fire safety awareness campaigns for county employees, schools, businesses, and local communities.
  • Conduct comprehensive fire evacuation drills to improve emergency response knowledge among staff and residents.
  • Ensure all county government buildings maintain adequate fire prevention systems and emergency firefighting equipment.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers, hydrants, alarms, emergency exits, and other fire protection installations to confirm operational readiness.
  • Recommend improvements that enhance workplace safety and minimize disaster risks.
  • Monitor compliance with occupational health and workplace safety regulations across county establishments.
  • Coordinate routine safety inspections and prepare professional reports highlighting identified hazards and corrective actions.
  • Support the establishment of effective disaster risk reduction programs within county departments.
  • Work closely with emergency responders, firefighting personnel, healthcare providers, and security agencies during emergency operations.
  • Coordinate rapid deployment of emergency response teams whenever incidents occur.
  • Participate in the county's twenty-four-hour emergency duty roster and respond promptly to emergency situations.
  • Maintain accurate emergency incident documentation and disaster response records.
  • Prepare periodic reports evaluating emergency preparedness activities and recommending service improvements.
  • Support continuous maintenance and readiness of firefighting equipment and rescue resources.
  • Assist in developing disaster communication procedures that facilitate timely dissemination of emergency information.
  • Promote community participation in disaster preparedness initiatives through public education forums.
  • Deliver training sessions on fire prevention, emergency evacuation procedures, and disaster response techniques.
  • Identify potential hazards through routine risk assessments and recommend preventive interventions.
  • Collaborate with county leadership in strengthening disaster management policies and emergency operating procedures.
  • Participate in simulation exercises that test emergency response capabilities and improve coordination among response agencies.
  • Monitor implementation of disaster preparedness projects and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Promote environmental safety practices that reduce disaster-related vulnerabilities.
  • Maintain professional confidentiality while handling sensitive emergency information.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing county emergency management systems.
  • Perform any other disaster management and emergency response responsibilities assigned in accordance with county government policies.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a strong commitment to public service, integrity, accountability, and professionalism. Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree in Disaster Management and Preparedness or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution. A Certificate in Firefighting or Fire Rescue obtained from a recognized training institution will be considered an added advantage.
