Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement nutrition and dietetics programmes in accordance with national healthcare standards, county health policies, and approved clinical guidelines.
  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments for patients using recognized screening and assessment methods.
  • Develop individualized nutrition care plans that address specific health conditions and nutritional requirements.
  • Provide professional nutrition counselling to patients, caregivers, and families on healthy dietary practices.
  • Deliver nutrition education sessions within hospitals, clinics, outreach programmes, and community forums.
  • Support inpatient and outpatient therapeutic feeding programmes by monitoring patient progress and dietary compliance.
  • Supervise the preparation, quality, safety, and appropriate distribution of therapeutic meals and specialized feeds.
  • Promote maternal nutrition initiatives that support healthy pregnancies and improved birth outcomes.
  • Participate in infant and young child feeding programmes that encourage optimal breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices.
  • Coordinate micronutrient supplementation activities according to established public health guidelines.
  • Collect, verify, organize, and maintain accurate nutrition records and statistical reports.
  • Monitor nutrition programme performance and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and patient management meetings where nutritional input is required.
  • Identify patients at nutritional risk and initiate timely interventions or referrals.
  • Educate patients living with chronic illnesses on nutrition strategies that support disease management.
  • Assist in developing nutrition education materials suitable for diverse community populations.
  • Participate in nutrition awareness campaigns during health promotion events.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in patient records while observing confidentiality requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards during all nutrition-related activities.
  • Monitor food safety standards relating to therapeutic feeding within healthcare facilities.
  • Participate in nutrition surveys, research activities, and programme evaluations when assigned.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to achieve integrated patient care outcomes.
  • Support emergency nutrition interventions during public health emergencies where required.
  • Assist in monitoring the nutritional status of vulnerable population groups.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle practices through evidence-based nutrition education.
  • Participate in continuous professional development programmes to maintain clinical competence.
  • Observe ethical standards established by the Nutrition and Dietetic Council of Kenya.
  • Provide technical guidance during nutrition outreach activities organized by the county.
  • Maintain proper inventory records for nutrition education materials and related supplies.
  • Participate in departmental planning meetings and contribute ideas that improve nutrition service delivery.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by working scheduled shifts and responding effectively to operational demands.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized and accredited medical training institution.
  • Valid Registration Certificate issued by the Nutrition and Dietetic Council of Kenya.
  • Valid Practicing License from the Nutrition and Dietetic Council of Kenya.
  • Eligibility to work within public healthcare institutions in Kenya.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical healthcare practice.
  • Strong understanding of clinical nutrition principles.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
