Job Description

The County Public Service Board invites applications from compassionate, dependable, and service-oriented individuals for the position of Support Staff (Care Giver)within the Education and Vocational Training Department. This role is ideal for candidates who are committed to promoting the wellbeing, comfort, safety, and dignity of learners requiring daily care and personal assistance within an educational setting. The successful candidate will become an important member of the school support team by helping create an environment where every learner receives appropriate care while participating fully in educational activities. The Care Giver will provide practical assistance to learners who require additional support with daily routines, mobility, hygiene, feeding, communication, and general wellbeing. Working closely with teachers, school administrators, parents, and other support personnel, the successful candidate will contribute to maintaining a welcoming, secure, and inclusive learning environment that respects individual needs and encourages learner participation. The position requires patience, empathy, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to safeguarding children and promoting their overall welfare. In addition to providing direct care, the successful candidate will assist in preparing learning spaces, organizing learner activities, supervising children during school routines, and ensuring that classrooms and surrounding areas remain clean, safe, and accessible. The role also involves observing learner wellbeing, reporting concerns promptly, and supporting the implementation of individualized care plans where necessary. Good communication and teamwork are essential, as the Care Giver will work alongside teachers and families to promote consistent support for learners throughout the school day. The successful applicant should demonstrate respect, confidentiality, accountability, and reliability while carrying out assigned responsibilities. The ability to remain calm, organized, and attentive in different situations will be essential to maintaining a positive learning environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily personal care assistance to learners requiring additional support.
  • Assist learners with feeding, dressing, grooming, and personal hygiene when required.
  • Support safe movement of learners within classrooms and school compounds.
  • Monitor learner wellbeing and promptly report any health or safety concerns.
  • Encourage independence while providing appropriate supervision and assistance.
  • Maintain respectful, caring, and professional interactions with every learner.
  • Support teachers during classroom learning activities and practical sessions.
  • Prepare classrooms and activity areas before daily learning begins.
  • Arrange educational materials and equipment for classroom use.
  • Keep learning spaces clean, organized, and free from potential hazards.
  • Assist learners during meal times while observing hygiene standards.
  • Supervise learners during breaks, assemblies, educational trips, and school events.
  • Help learners participate in recreational and co-curricular activities.
  • Follow established child safeguarding and protection procedures at all times.
  • Observe confidentiality when handling learner information.
  • Promote respectful behaviour and positive social interaction among learners.
  • Encourage inclusion and equal participation in school programmes.
  • Support learners with mobility challenges using approved safety procedures.
  • Assist during emergency drills and follow school safety guidelines.
  • Report accidents, incidents, or unusual observations without delay.
  • Work cooperatively with teachers, school management, and fellow support staff.
  • Maintain accurate records where required by school procedures.
  • Assist in organizing learner belongings and classroom resources.
  • Ensure care equipment is handled responsibly and stored appropriately.
  • Support implementation of individual learner care plans where applicable.
  • Encourage healthy hygiene habits among learners.
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions, and staff development activities.
  • Contribute to maintaining a welcoming school environment.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, honesty, and accountability in daily duties.
  • Respect diversity and treat all learners fairly regardless of individual circumstances.
  • Assist with school health promotion activities when required.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers regarding learner wellbeing.
  • Support parents by sharing relevant information through appropriate school channels.
  • Perform additional support duties assigned within the scope of the position.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certificate in Care Giving, Early Childhood Development, Community Health, Social Work, Special Needs Education, or another relevant qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Valid academic and professional certificates.
  • Basic knowledge of child care and learner safety practices.
  • Understanding of child safeguarding principles.
  • Compliance with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, where applicable.
