Job Overview
The Cartographer at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) plays a critical role in designing, producing, and maintaining accurate geographic representations of statistical data. This role involves integrating geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and cartographic principles to support planning, policy formulation, and evidence-based decision making at national and county levels. Cartographers ensure that spatial data is accurately captured, visualized, and communicated in a way that supports KNBS’s mandate to provide reliable statistical information. Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining detailed maps and spatial datasets that reflect population distribution, infrastructure, natural resources, administrative boundaries, and other socio-economic indicators. Cartographers collaborate with field officers, survey teams, and data analysts to collect, verify, and validate geographic and statistical data. They utilize modern GIS software, remote sensing tools, and spatial databases to process, analyze, and visualize spatial information in support of national surveys, censuses, and other statistical projects. The role also requires creating thematic, topographic, and interactive maps for statistical publications, reports, dashboards, and online platforms. Cartographers ensure the consistency, accuracy, and clarity of all cartographic outputs while adhering to national and international mapping standards. They may also provide guidance and technical support to stakeholders, including county governments, development partners, and research institutions, on spatial data interpretation and mapping techniques. In addition, Cartographers contribute to the development of geospatial frameworks, metadata documentation, and spatial data infrastructure that enhance the accessibility and usability of geographic information across KNBS.
