Job Description

The Kenya School of Government is seeking to recruit dedicated, detail-oriented, and service-focused Public Area Attendants to support the institution's commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, welcoming, and professionally managed learning environment. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who take pride in delivering high standards of cleanliness while contributing to a positive experience for trainees, staff, visitors, and other stakeholders across the institution's facilities. The successful candidates will become part of a professional support team responsible for preserving the appearance, hygiene, and functionality of public spaces throughout the campus. As a Public Area Attendant I, you will play an essential role in ensuring that all shared areas remain neat, sanitary, organized, and presentable at all times. Your daily responsibilities will contribute directly to creating an environment that promotes health, comfort, productivity, and institutional excellence. The position requires individuals who can work independently while also collaborating effectively with colleagues to achieve departmental objectives. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, integrity, and a genuine commitment to delivering quality housekeeping services. The role involves maintaining cleanliness in corridors, reception areas, conference facilities, classrooms, offices, waiting lounges, stairways, washrooms, entrances, and other designated public spaces. You will monitor cleanliness standards throughout the day, replenish consumable supplies where required, report maintenance concerns promptly, and ensure that institutional hygiene procedures are consistently followed. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments are essential for success in this position. Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain exceptional cleanliness standards in all assigned public areas including corridors, reception spaces, classrooms, meeting rooms, staircases, entrances, lounges, washrooms, and administrative facilities.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, polish, sanitize, and disinfect surfaces according to institutional housekeeping procedures.
  • Ensure public areas remain clean, attractive, organized, and welcoming throughout the working day.
  • Replenish soap, tissue paper, hand sanitizers, paper towels, waste liners, and other consumable supplies in designated locations.
  • Empty waste bins regularly and dispose of waste in accordance with approved environmental and sanitation guidelines.
  • Inspect assigned work areas frequently to identify cleaning requirements requiring immediate attention.
  • Report maintenance defects such as leaking taps, damaged furniture, faulty lighting, blocked drainage systems, broken windows, or unsafe conditions to the appropriate department.
  • Arrange furniture and equipment appropriately before meetings, conferences, training sessions, and institutional events where required.
  • Follow approved health, hygiene, sanitation, and occupational safety procedures during daily operations.
  • Handle cleaning chemicals responsibly while observing manufacturer instructions and institutional safety regulations.
  • Operate housekeeping equipment safely and ensure all assigned tools remain clean, functional, and properly stored after use.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of cleaning materials and promptly communicate replenishment needs to supervisors.
  • Assist in preparing facilities for official ceremonies, workshops, seminars, conferences, examinations, and special institutional functions.
  • Respond promptly to emergency cleaning requirements arising from accidental spills or unexpected situations.
  • Support environmental sustainability initiatives by promoting proper waste segregation and responsible disposal practices.
  • Maintain high personal hygiene standards and wear the prescribed protective clothing and uniform while on duty.
  • Demonstrate courtesy, professionalism, and respect when interacting with trainees, employees, visitors, suppliers, and guests.
  • Protect institutional property by reporting suspicious activities, security concerns, or unauthorized access within assigned areas.
  • Complete assigned housekeeping tasks within established timelines while maintaining quality standards.
  • Keep accurate records where required concerning completed cleaning schedules or assigned operational duties.
  • Participate actively in departmental meetings, safety briefings, and institutional training programmes.
  • Cooperate effectively with supervisors and fellow employees to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding institutional operations encountered during daily assignments.
  • Observe punctuality, dependability, honesty, and accountability throughout the contract period.
  • Comply fully with all Kenya School of Government policies, regulations, code of conduct, and administrative procedures.
  • Perform any other housekeeping or facility support duties assigned by supervisors that fall within the scope of the position.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certificate in Housekeeping and Laundry or a closely related qualification obtained from a recognized institution.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications.
  • Strong understanding of professional housekeeping practices and sanitation standards.
