Job Description

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) invites applications from accomplished insurance and regulatory professionals for the position of Principal Insurance Officer. This is a permanent and pensionable leadership opportunity designed for an experienced professional with exceptional knowledge of insurance management, enterprise risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance. Reporting to the Manager-Insurance & Board Secretarial, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership in strengthening the organization's insurance framework while safeguarding company assets through effective policy administration and regulatory oversight. The Principal Insurance Officer will play a central role in developing and enhancing insurance governance frameworks that align with corporate objectives, statutory obligations, and emerging industry standards. The position requires an individual capable of evaluating organizational risks, coordinating comprehensive insurance solutions, managing policy renewals, monitoring claims administration, and ensuring that every insurance arrangement adequately protects the company's operational activities and strategic investments. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with internal departments, regulatory agencies, insurance brokers, underwriters, legal advisors, and other stakeholders to ensure continuous compliance with applicable legislation and insurance requirements. The role also involves reviewing changes in regulatory frameworks, interpreting insurance provisions, advising management on emerging risks, and supporting informed decision-making through timely reporting and professional recommendations. As a senior member of the Insurance & Board Secretarial Department, the officer will supervise technical activities, mentor junior staff, promote operational excellence, and strengthen internal controls that improve service delivery. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the organization's insurance management framework.
  • Supervise the development, review, and implementation of insurance policies, operational procedures, and regulatory compliance guidelines.
  • Provide professional advice to management on insurance risk exposure and appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate the preparation, evaluation, and submission of insurance proposals for organizational assets and operations.
  • Manage the company's insurance portfolio to ensure comprehensive and adequate coverage.
  • Monitor policy renewals and recommend improvements that strengthen organizational protection.
  • Ensure all insurance documentation remains complete, accurate, and properly maintained.
  • Coordinate insurance claims from initial notification through investigation, documentation, negotiation, and settlement.
  • Prepare periodic reports highlighting policy performance, outstanding claims, risk exposure, and compliance status.
  • Liaise with insurance companies, brokers, assessors, investigators, legal advisors, and regulators on insurance matters.
  • Monitor changes in legislation affecting insurance operations and recommend timely compliance measures.
  • Ensure statutory licenses, approvals, certifications, and regulatory filings remain valid and up to date.
  • Conduct insurance risk assessments across various organizational functions.
  • Support procurement teams by reviewing insurance requirements in contracts and agreements.
  • Advise management on policy interpretation, exclusions, endorsements, and insurance obligations.
  • Coordinate insurance audits and implement corrective recommendations where necessary.
  • Supervise departmental staff by allocating assignments, monitoring performance, and providing technical guidance.Promote high standards of governance, accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct.
  • Develop performance indicators that improve insurance administration efficiency.
  • Review insurance market trends and recommend innovative solutions that enhance organizational resilience.
  • Build productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support business continuity initiatives through effective insurance planning.
  • Participate in strategic planning meetings involving enterprise risk management.
  • Prepare executive reports and presentations for senior management whenever required.
  • Maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive organizational information.
  • Perform any other insurance-related responsibilities assigned in support of departmental and corporate objectives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Master's Degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Commerce (Insurance), Social Sciences, or another relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Supervisory management course lasting at least two (2) weeks.
  • Membership in the Insurance Institute of Kenya (IIK), Society of Chartered Insurance Institute (SCII), or another recognized professional body.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
