Responsibilities for Mechanic/Driver Grade 3/4 – Ref: (UoEm/MD/02/2026) in Kenya
- The Mechanic/Driver will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all University vehicles through a wide range of maintenance and operational tasks. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs of University vehicles to ensure they remain in optimal working condition and comply with safety standards. This includes checking engine performance, brakes, tires, fluids, and other critical components.
- Diagnosing mechanical faults accurately, identifying the appropriate spare parts, and carrying out timely repairs on vehicle engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension systems, electrical systems, and other essential components.
- Maintaining accurate, detailed, and up-to-date service records for each vehicle, including mileage, maintenance history, repair logs, and parts usage, using both manual and computerized record-keeping systems.
- Assisting in the management and procurement of vehicle spare parts, ensuring that high-quality components are available for all maintenance and repair activities and that inventory levels are monitored efficiently.
- Responding promptly to emergency breakdowns, performing roadside repairs when necessary, and providing timely assistance to minimize vehicle downtime and ensure continued University operations.
- Safely driving University vehicles for official duties, adhering strictly to traffic rules, safety protocols, and assigned schedules, while representing the University professionally at all times.
- Monitoring vehicle performance continuously, identifying issues early, and recommending improvements, replacements, or upgrades to maintain fleet reliability and operational efficiency.
- Collaborating with other technical staff to implement and follow standard operating procedures for vehicle maintenance, fleet management, and workshop operations.
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe garage and workshop environment, ensuring proper handling, storage, and disposal of tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.
- Providing training, guidance, and mentorship to junior staff or apprentices, fostering skill development, knowledge transfer, and adherence to best practices within the department.
- Ensuring full compliance with Government regulations, University policies, and industry standards related to vehicle maintenance, occupational health, safety, and environmental protection.
- This position demands a proactive, detail-oriented individual who can balance mechanical duties with driving responsibilities, contribute to team efficiency, and uphold the University’s standards of excellence.
