Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate assigned university vehicles while observing all national traffic regulations, institutional transport procedures, and road safety standards.
- Transport university staff, students, guests, and authorized visitors to designated destinations efficiently and professionally.
- Deliver official documents, examination materials, laboratory equipment, learning resources, and administrative supplies safely and within scheduled timelines.
- Perform comprehensive daily vehicle inspections before and after every assignment to confirm roadworthiness.
- Check engine oil, coolant levels, brake systems, tyres, steering components, battery condition, lighting systems, and fuel levels before commencing journeys.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date vehicle logbooks, mileage records, fuel consumption records, and maintenance reports.
- Report mechanical faults, unusual vehicle performance, accidents, or maintenance requirements immediately to the relevant supervisor.
- Coordinate scheduled servicing and preventive maintenance to minimize operational interruptions.
- Ensure assigned vehicles remain clean, presentable, and properly sanitized at all times.
- Practice defensive driving techniques to minimize risks and enhance passenger safety under varying road and weather conditions.
- Provide courteous assistance to passengers during boarding, luggage handling, and disembarking where necessary.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding official assignments, passenger information, and university operations.
- Support transportation during official meetings, conferences, graduation ceremonies, research activities, and community outreach events.
- Respond appropriately during emergencies while following approved institutional safety procedures.
- Ensure emergency equipment, first aid supplies, fire extinguishers, and safety accessories remain available and functional.
- Verify that vehicle insurance, inspection certificates, licenses, and statutory compliance documents remain valid.
- Follow approved travel schedules while remaining flexible to accommodate urgent transport requests.
- Observe fuel efficiency practices and avoid unnecessary vehicle idling.
- Immediately report accidents or incidents and cooperate fully during investigations.
- Assist in coordinating transport logistics during university functions requiring multiple vehicle movements.
- Comply with occupational health and safety regulations during all transport operations.
- Maintain professional appearance and conduct while representing the university.
- Exercise sound judgment when selecting travel routes to maximize safety and efficiency.
- Support secure transportation of sensitive institutional materials where authorized.
- Keep communication with supervisors regarding journey progress and schedule adjustments.
- Participate in transport-related training and continuous professional development activities.
- Observe institutional policies, ethical standards, and accountability requirements.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, discipline, and commitment throughout all assigned duties.
- Promote a positive image of the university through exceptional customer service and responsible driving practices.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Applicants should possess the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or an equivalent qualification together with a minimum of six years of proven driving experience, or at least nine years of relevant driving experience gained within either the public or private sector. Candidates must have successfully completed the Occupational Trade Test Grade II for Drivers and hold a valid Kenyan driving license covering the approved vehicle classes with a current PSV endorsement. Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate, First Aid certification, Certificate of Intensive Defensive Driving, and an Emergency Vehicle Operator Certificate (EVOC) is mandatory, while Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification will be considered an added advantage. Applicants must present a valid Certificate of Good Conduct issued by the Kenya Police Service and demonstrate compliance with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
