Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate the daily operation of medical laboratory facilities to ensure uninterrupted teaching, learning, and research activities.
- Prepare laboratories before every practical session by arranging equipment, specimens, chemicals, reagents, and learning materials.
- Process, preserve, label, and store laboratory specimens according to approved laboratory procedures and quality standards.
- Conduct routine and specialized laboratory analyses with precision while maintaining high standards of accuracy.
- Operate laboratory instruments safely and efficiently in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and institutional guidelines.
- Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, calibration, and functional checks on laboratory equipment.
- Report equipment faults promptly and coordinate servicing or repairs to minimize operational downtime.
- Maintain detailed laboratory records, experiment documentation, inventory registers, maintenance logs, and testing reports.
- Monitor laboratory stock levels and prepare timely requisitions for chemicals, reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies.
- Receive, inspect, organize, and safely store laboratory materials while maintaining accurate inventory records.
- Ensure laboratory waste is handled, segregated, and disposed of according to safety and environmental regulations.
- Maintain exceptional cleanliness and organization throughout all laboratory workspaces.
- Enforce laboratory safety policies and ensure all users comply with established procedures.
- Monitor compliance with occupational health, biosafety, and infection prevention protocols.
- Prepare laboratory manuals, practical instructions, and operating procedures for student learning activities.
- Review and update laboratory documentation regularly to align with curriculum developments and emerging laboratory practices.
- Support lecturers during practical lessons by preparing demonstration materials and laboratory setups.
- Supervise students during laboratory sessions and provide technical guidance throughout experiments.
- Demonstrate proper laboratory techniques and encourage adherence to professional laboratory standards.
- Assist academic staff in evaluating practical assignments, laboratory reports, and related learning activities.
- Verify that laboratory equipment is functioning correctly before practical examinations and assessments.
- Participate in laboratory quality assurance initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency.
- Maintain confidentiality of laboratory information, records, and research data.
- Collaborate with faculty members to support academic projects and research initiatives.
- Respond promptly to laboratory emergencies while following approved incident management procedures.
- Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and professional development programs.
- Recommend improvements that enhance laboratory efficiency, safety, and service delivery.
- Maintain effective communication with academic departments regarding laboratory scheduling and operational requirements.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, professional standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Undertake additional laboratory or technical assignments delegated by the immediate supervisor in support of university objectives.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Applicants should possess a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory technology or another closely related discipline obtained from a recognized and accredited institution. Registration as a member of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) together with a valid practicing license is mandatory. Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in a medical laboratory, teaching laboratory, research institution, hospital, or similar technical environment. Strong knowledge of laboratory quality assurance systems, biosafety practices, specimen handling procedures, equipment maintenance, and laboratory documentation is essential.
