Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations to assess visual performance and identify abnormalities.
- Diagnose refractive errors and other common ocular conditions.
- Prescribe and dispense corrective lenses, including glasses and contact lenses.
- Provide treatment recommendations for minor eye conditions within scope of practice.
- Detect early signs of ocular diseases and initiate appropriate referrals.
- Educate patients on eye health maintenance, preventive care, and vision hygiene.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and clinical documentation.
- Interpret diagnostic results and apply clinical findings to patient care decisions.
- Ensure proper fitting and adjustment of corrective eyewear for patients.
- Collaborate with medical staff in managing patients requiring multidisciplinary care.
- Participate in community eye screening and outreach programs where applicable.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust vision correction solutions when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and clinical safety protocols.
- Maintain optical equipment and ensure proper use within clinical settings.
- Uphold professional standards and adhere to regulatory requirements governing optometry practice.
- Support health promotion initiatives related to eye care awareness.
- Provide guidance on lifestyle and environmental factors affecting vision health.
- Participate in continuous professional development and clinical training activities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma
Skills & Competencies
- Diploma in Optometry from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration and licensing with Optometrists’ Association of Kenya (OAK) or Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority (KHPOA).
- Valid practicing authorization as required by regulatory bodies.
- Strong understanding of ocular anatomy and visual system function.
- Ability to perform accurate vision testing and eye assessments.
- Competence in prescribing and fitting corrective lenses.
- Strong attention to detail and clinical accuracy.
- Good communication and patient interaction skills.
- Ability to maintain precise clinical documentation and records.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with digital health systems.
- Strong ethical conduct and professionalism.
- Ability to work independently and within a healthcare team.
- Problem-solving and patient-focused decision-making skills.
