Job Description

The Kenya Trade Network Agency (KENTRADE) is seeking to recruit a skilled, proactive, and service-oriented System Administrator to strengthen its Information Technology function. The successful applicant will contribute to maintaining system availability, protecting organizational information assets, and supporting users through timely technical assistance. The position also involves implementing preventive maintenance schedules, performing software and firmware updates, managing backup and recovery processes, monitoring infrastructure health, and ensuring that systems continue operating efficiently under changing business requirements. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with cybersecurity, network, database, and application support teams to strengthen the overall technology environment while identifying opportunities to modernize infrastructure through emerging technologies and automation. As part of the ICT department, the System Administrator will participate in planning future technology improvements, evaluating infrastructure performance, recommending hardware and software upgrades, and supporting digital transformation initiatives across the agency. The role requires careful documentation of system configurations, operational procedures, technical standards, and incident resolution activities to promote consistency and knowledge sharing. Key Responsibilities

  • Administer, configure, maintain, and optimize enterprise Windows and Linux server environments to achieve maximum availability, stability, and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor server health, infrastructure performance, storage utilization, and system capacity using appropriate monitoring tools while proactively resolving emerging issues.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, patch, and maintain operating systems, enterprise software, middleware, and supporting applications according to established maintenance schedules.
  • Design, implement, monitor, and continuously improve backup strategies to safeguard organizational information and support reliable disaster recovery processes.
  • Test backup restoration procedures regularly to confirm data integrity and organizational readiness during unexpected service interruptions.
  • Manage virtualization platforms and associated infrastructure to maximize resource utilization, scalability, and operational flexibility.
  • Administer cloud-based infrastructure services where applicable while supporting secure hybrid technology environments.
  • Configure and maintain Active Directory services, domain controllers, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, identity management, and authentication services.
  • Create, modify, suspend, and remove user accounts while ensuring appropriate system permissions and secure access controls.
  • Enforce password policies, account security standards, privileged access management practices, and authentication controls across enterprise systems.
  • Identify, investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, operating system, storage, and infrastructure incidents within agreed service levels.
  • Provide second-level and third-level technical support to users experiencing complex system-related issues.
  • Collaborate with network administrators, cybersecurity specialists, database administrators, software developers, and business users to improve ICT service delivery.
  • Monitor system logs and infrastructure alerts to detect performance degradation, configuration issues, or potential security threats.
  • Support vulnerability remediation activities by applying timely software updates and implementing security hardening recommendations.
  • Maintain antivirus, endpoint protection, and server security controls to strengthen organizational cyber resilience.
  • Develop, review, and maintain comprehensive technical documentation covering system architecture, configuration standards, maintenance procedures, recovery processes, and operational guidelines.
  • Participate in ICT infrastructure planning, capacity forecasting, technology refresh initiatives, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Evaluate new infrastructure technologies and recommend practical solutions that improve reliability, scalability, security, and operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate vendor support activities, warranty services, software licensing, and maintenance agreements where necessary.
  • Assist in procurement evaluations by providing technical specifications and infrastructure recommendations.
  • Ensure ICT infrastructure complies with organizational policies, government regulations, and applicable information security standards.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance activities outside normal working hours whenever operational requirements demand.
  • Support business continuity initiatives by contributing to disaster recovery planning, infrastructure resilience testing, and operational readiness exercises.
  • Prepare technical reports, infrastructure performance summaries, incident analyses, and maintenance records for management review.
  • Continuously identify opportunities for automation, process optimization, and service enhancement within enterprise systems administration.
  • Perform any additional ICT infrastructure responsibilities assigned by management in support of organizational objectives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or another closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of practical experience administering enterprise ICT infrastructure.
  • Strong hands
  • on experience managing both Windows Server and Linux operating systems.
  • Practical knowledge of virtualization technologies and cloud computing platforms.
  • Solid understanding of enterprise networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, routing, and switching.
  • Experience implementing backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, system hardening, endpoint security, and access management.
  • Experience administering Active Directory, Group Policy, identity management, and authentication services.
  • Professional certification such as Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator, Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or another equivalent industry
  • recognized certification.
