Job Description

Mount Kenya University invites applications from accomplished maritime professionals to join the Malindi Maritime Academy as a Part-Time Trainer – Maritime Safety under the Centre for Professional Development Services. This opportunity is designed for experienced professionals who are passionate about developing the next generation of competent seafarers while supporting Kenya's expanding maritime sector and blue economy initiatives. The successful trainer will play a vital role in delivering competency-based maritime safety education that equips trainees with internationally recognized practical knowledge, technical competence, and professional confidence. Working within a modern maritime learning environment, the trainer will facilitate both theoretical instruction and practical demonstrations aligned with internationally accepted maritime safety practices and regulatory expectations. The position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the preparation of maritime personnel capable of operating safely in diverse marine environments while maintaining high professional and ethical standards. The trainer will design engaging learning experiences that promote active participation, practical problem-solving, and continuous professional growth. Training sessions will cover essential maritime safety principles including emergency preparedness, onboard hazard prevention, personal survival techniques, fire safety awareness, first aid fundamentals, safety management systems, risk identification, accident prevention, and compliance with internationally recognized maritime conventions and operational procedures. Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver professional maritime safety training using competency-based instructional approaches.
  • Facilitate classroom lectures covering maritime safety principles and operational procedures.
  • Conduct practical demonstrations for internationally recognized maritime safety courses.
  • Teach personal survival techniques using approved training methodologies.
  • Deliver fire prevention and firefighting instruction through practical exercises.
  • Train participants in emergency preparedness and coordinated emergency response procedures.
  • Facilitate first aid and onboard medical emergency awareness sessions.
  • Guide trainees in hazard identification and workplace risk assessment techniques.
  • Explain maritime safety management systems and their practical application.
  • Deliver instruction on compliance with the International Safety Management Code.
  • Prepare comprehensive lesson plans aligned with approved learning outcomes.
  • Develop learner-centered instructional resources that enhance knowledge retention.
  • Organize practical simulations that strengthen operational competence.
  • Conduct regular learner assessments using fair and objective evaluation methods.
  • Provide constructive feedback that supports continuous learner improvement.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Occupational Safety, or another relevant discipline.
  • Certified maritime trainer with recognized STCW and/or IMO Model Course qualifications.
  • Strong understanding of international maritime safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Practical knowledge of safety management systems and operational risk management.
  • Excellent classroom facilitation and learner engagement skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct practical maritime safety demonstrations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Effective presentation and instructional delivery skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and mentoring capabilities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prepare structured lesson plans and assessment materials.
