Job Description

A reputable healthcare institution is seeking a dedicated Hospital Housekeeper to join its environmental services team in Nairobi. This position plays an important role in creating and maintaining a clean, organized, comfortable, and hygienic healthcare environment that supports quality patient care and operational excellence. The successful candidate will contribute to the hospital's commitment to safety by ensuring that every assigned area consistently meets established cleanliness and sanitation standards. The Housekeeper will be responsible for cleaning patient wards, consultation rooms, operating support areas, offices, waiting lounges, corridors, washrooms, laboratories, staff facilities, and other designated spaces according to approved hospital procedures. Every task should be performed with close attention to infection prevention guidelines, proper waste segregation, and safe handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment. The ideal candidate understands that cleanliness within a healthcare facility extends beyond appearance. Maintaining sanitized surroundings helps minimize health risks, enhances patient confidence, improves staff productivity, and promotes a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Key Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize patient rooms, treatment areas, offices, corridors, waiting areas, washrooms, and other assigned hospital spaces according to approved schedules.
  • Follow established infection prevention and environmental hygiene procedures during every cleaning assignment.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, polish, dust, and disinfect surfaces using approved cleaning techniques.
  • Collect, separate, and dispose of general and clinical waste following hospital safety guidelines.
  • Replenish soap dispensers, paper towels, tissue products, sanitizers, and other hygiene supplies whenever required.
  • Ensure patient rooms remain clean, orderly, comfortable, and ready for admission or discharge activities.
  • Safely prepare, store, dilute, and use cleaning chemicals according to manufacturer instructions and workplace policies.
  • Operate housekeeping equipment responsibly while reporting faults requiring repair or replacement.
  • Respond promptly to urgent cleaning requests arising from spills, accidents, or emergency situations.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness in public areas to create a welcoming environment for patients and visitors.
  • Observe confidentiality while working in patient care areas and respect the privacy of all hospital occupants.
  • Report damaged furniture, faulty fixtures, plumbing issues, or maintenance concerns to the appropriate department.
  • Support routine deep-cleaning schedules for specialized clinical areas whenever assigned.
  • Assist with laundry handling procedures where required while maintaining hygiene standards.
  • Maintain cleaning records and complete assigned checklists accurately.
  • Wear appropriate protective equipment while performing assigned duties.
  • Follow occupational health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Cooperate effectively with nursing teams, supervisors, and fellow support staff.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental cleanliness and patient safety.
  • Perform any additional housekeeping duties reasonably assigned by supervisors in support of efficient hospital operations.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certificate in Infection Control Practices in Housekeeping and Laundry
  • Food Handler Certificate
  • Certificate of Good Conduct
  • KCSE Certificate or equivalent qualification is an added advantage.
