Job Description

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is seeking an accomplished and visionary **General Manager – Geothermal Resource Development** to provide strategic direction for one of Kenya's most critical renewable energy portfolios. This executive appointment presents an exceptional opportunity for an experienced geothermal professional to shape long-term resource development initiatives, strengthen exploration capabilities, and lead multidisciplinary technical teams responsible for expanding sustainable geothermal energy production. Reporting directly to the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will guide the planning, execution, and continuous enhancement of geothermal resource development programmes that support national energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. The role requires an individual capable of translating corporate objectives into practical operational strategies while ensuring technical excellence throughout exploration, reservoir assessment, steam field management, drilling target identification, and geothermal resource optimization. The General Manager will oversee integrated functions involving geoscience, geothermal engineering, reservoir engineering, environmental management, occupational safety, resource utilization, and well performance evaluation. Through effective leadership, the office holder will promote collaboration among technical specialists, project managers, regulatory stakeholders, research institutions, and strategic partners involved in geothermal development activities. A major responsibility of this position involves directing geological investigations, geophysical interpretation, geochemical studies, reservoir modelling, drilling support, and resource assessment programmes that enable informed investment decisions. The successful candidate will champion innovation by encouraging adoption of modern analytical techniques, emerging geothermal technologies, advanced monitoring systems, and data-driven decision-making processes that improve operational performance while safeguarding geothermal reservoirs for long-term utilization. The position further provides leadership in developing institutional policies, technical standards, operational procedures, governance frameworks, and performance management systems that align with national legislation and organizational strategic priorities. The General Manager will ensure geothermal development programmes maintain high standards of environmental stewardship, occupational health and safety, resource conservation, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and sustainable development. Working closely with internal directorates and external stakeholders, the successful candidate will facilitate integrated planning for exploration projects, drilling campaigns, reservoir management, steam supply optimization, resource monitoring, and infrastructure expansion. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic executive leadership for geothermal resource development programmes in alignment with organizational goals, national energy priorities, and approved corporate strategies.
  • Formulate, implement, monitor, and continuously improve geothermal development strategies that strengthen long-term resource sustainability and operational performance.
  • Direct multidisciplinary teams responsible for geological, geophysical, geochemical, reservoir engineering, and geothermal resource assessment activities.
  • Oversee exploration planning to identify promising geothermal prospects using scientific evidence, advanced modelling techniques, and integrated technical evaluations.
  • Guide the identification, prioritization, and validation of drilling locations for exploration, appraisal, production, and reinjection wells.
  • Supervise reservoir evaluation programmes to ensure accurate characterization of geothermal resources and reliable forecasting of production potential.
  • Lead development and periodic review of conceptual geothermal models that support exploration planning and investment decision-making.
  • Provide executive oversight for steam field management initiatives that maximize efficiency, reliability, and long-term reservoir productivity.
  • Direct resource monitoring programmes using appropriate scientific methods, performance indicators, and field measurements.
  • Ensure geothermal reservoir management practices promote sustainability while protecting underground resources from overexploitation.
  • Coordinate technical reviews of drilling proposals, exploration reports, reservoir studies, and development recommendations.
  • Provide guidance on well measurement programmes, production testing, pressure monitoring, and performance evaluation.
  • Promote the adoption of innovative geothermal technologies that improve exploration accuracy, operational efficiency, and resource utilization.
  • Develop policies, technical procedures, operational standards, and governance frameworks supporting geothermal development objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, occupational health standards, and applicable regulatory requirements throughout geothermal operations.
  • Champion strong safety culture across all geothermal resource development activities by promoting proactive risk management and continuous improvement.
  • Strengthen collaboration with government agencies, development partners, research institutions, investors, and industry stakeholders.
  • Support preparation of departmental budgets, resource allocation plans, and long-term investment strategies.
  • Monitor departmental performance using measurable indicators and implement corrective actions where necessary.
  • Provide technical leadership during project planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting phases.
  • Mentor senior technical professionals while fostering continuous learning, innovation, and professional development.
  • Build effective multidisciplinary teams capable of delivering complex geothermal programmes within approved timelines and budgets.
  • Facilitate knowledge management initiatives that preserve institutional expertise and encourage technical excellence.
  • Review emerging geothermal technologies and recommend practical solutions that enhance organizational competitiveness.
  • Represent the organization during technical forums, professional conferences, regulatory engagements, and strategic stakeholder meetings.
  • Promote responsible environmental stewardship through sustainable geothermal resource utilization practices.
  • Strengthen quality assurance systems supporting exploration, reservoir engineering, drilling support, and geothermal development functions.
  • Drive organizational transformation by encouraging innovation, accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence.
  • Prepare comprehensive executive reports, strategic recommendations, and technical briefings for senior leadership and the Board where required.
  • Perform any other executive responsibilities assigned by the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer that support organizational success.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Earth Sciences, Geological Sciences, Geothermal Technology, Engineering, or another closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Earth Sciences, Geological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Leadership course with a cumulative duration of at least four (4) weeks.
  • Membership in the Geothermal Association of Kenya (GAK) or another relevant professional association.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications relevant to executive and technical management.
  • Compliance with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
