The Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of KETRACO serves as the highest-ranking executive responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational performance of the organization. The role involves providing visionary leadership in the planning, development, operation, and maintenance of Kenya’s high-voltage electricity transmission infrastructure. The MD/CEO is accountable for ensuring that the company fulfills its mandate of expanding and modernizing the national electricity grid to support economic growth, industrialization, and regional power integration. The MD/CEO is expected to align the company’s strategic objectives with national energy policies, particularly those set by the Ministry of Energy, and Petroleum, and other and government agencies. This includes overseeing the implementation of large-scale transmission projects such as 132kV, 220kV, and 400kV transmission lines and associated substations. The role also involves ensuring that all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with technical, environmental, and regulatory standards. In addition, the MD/CEO is responsible for driving innovation in transmission technologies, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring reliability and stability of the national grid. The position requires strong stakeholder engagement skills, as the MD/CEO must coordinate with government institutions, development partners, private investors, contractors, and regional power pools such as the East Africa Power Pool. Responsibilities for Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer in Kenya
- Provide overall strategic leadership, vision, and executive direction for KETRACO in line with national energy policies and Kenya’s Vision 2030
- Develop, review, and implement long-term corporate strategic plans aligned with national electricity transmission and energy sector development goals
- Oversee the planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of high-voltage transmission infrastructure across the country
- Ensure efficient execution and timely delivery of transmission projects including 132kV, 220kV, 400kV, and ultra-high voltage systems
- Lead expansion of the national grid to improve electricity access, reliability, and affordability across urban and rural areas
- Supervise and provide direction to senior management teams and ensure optimal organizational performance and accountability
- Ensure strict compliance with national energy regulations, public procurement laws, environmental standards, and donor requirements
- Lead financial management, including budgeting, expenditure control, revenue optimization, and efficient allocation of organizational resources
- Promote transparency, accountability, ethical leadership, and strong corporate governance practices across all departments
- Engage and maintain strategic relationships with government ministries, regulatory bodies, county governments, and energy sector stakeholders
- Coordinate regional power pool interconnections to support cross-border electricity trade and regional energy integration
- Drive innovation, modernization, and technological advancement in transmission systems and grid infrastructure
- Oversee enterprise risk management frameworks to ensure operational resilience and stability of the national grid
- Ensure timely planning and execution of capital-intensive infrastructure projects within approved budgets and timelines
- Strengthen partnerships with development partners, international financiers, multilateral agencies, and private sector investors
- Promote human capital development through structured training, leadership development, and capacity-building programs
- Ensure strict adherence to occupational health, safety, environmental protection, and sustainability standards across all projects
- Monitor and evaluate organizational performance using key performance indicators (KPIs) and implement corrective actions where necessary
- Represent KETRACO in national, regional, and international energy forums, conferences, and strategic engagements
- Lead digital transformation initiatives including smart grid systems, automation, and advanced transmission monitoring technologies
- Ensure sustainable expansion and modernization of Kenya’s electricity transmission network to meet growing national demand
- Champion energy efficiency, loss reduction, and system reliability improvements across the transmission network
- Oversee stakeholder communication strategies and public relations to enhance corporate reputation and trust
- Guide emergency response and crisis management planning for grid failures and national system disruptions
- Ensure compliance with donor-funded project requirements and reporting obligations
- Promote research, innovation, and adoption of emerging energy transmission technologies
- Foster inter-agency coordination with generation companies and distribution utilities for system stability
- Ensure optimal utilization and maintenance of national transmission assets for long-term sustainability
