About Hatua Network

In 2006, Peter Kwame and Gabrielle Fondiller conducted a research project examining government policies affecting street vendors in Likoni, a community within Mombasa, Kenya. Through their work, they became increasingly aware of the significant barriers to education faced by many young people in the area, including poverty, limited access to learning resources, and lack of educational support systems.
Motivated to create lasting change, they established the Likoni Scholarship Fund in 2007, initially sponsoring seven students to pursue their secondary education. What began as a small initiative quickly grew as the need for support became more evident within the community.
By 2015, the organization had evolved into Hatua Likoni, directly sponsoring 250 students—150 in secondary school and 100 in college and university. Beyond providing scholarships, Hatua Likoni expanded its mission to serve the broader community. Its programs now include civic education initiatives that empower residents with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities, as well as the management of a community library that offers access to books, study space, and educational resources.
Through its continued commitment to education and community development, Hatua Likoni has become a vital pillar of opportunity and empowerment in Likoni.
